Sony has announced a major milestone in its gaming division, with PlayStation 5 sales reaching 75 million units worldwide. This achievement comes as part of Sony's stellar third-quarter financial report, which ended December 31, marking one of the most successful periods in the company's history.
The gaming division, Sony Interactive Entertainment, led the company's revenue stream with sales of 1.6 trillion yen ($10.5 billion), representing an 11.8% increase year-over-year. Hardware sales were particularly strong, generating 724.7 billion yen ($4.7 billion), while game and add-on content sales followed closely at 718.2 billion yen ($4.66 billion).
The holiday quarter saw exceptional PS5 performance with 9.5 million units sold, marking a 12.5% increase year-over-year and an impressive 200% jump from the previous quarter. However, the PS5 still trails slightly behind its predecessor, as the PS4 had reached 76.7 million units sold during the same timeframe in its lifecycle.
Digital gaming continues to gain momentum, with digital downloads accounting for 74% of game sales, up from 66% the previous year. Total game sales for PS4 and PS5 reached 95.9 million units during the quarter, with 11.6 million of those being first-party titles.
PlayStation Network achieved a significant milestone with monthly active users reaching an all-time high of 129 million across all PlayStation generations, representing an increase of 6 million users compared to the previous year.
Looking ahead, Sony's Chief Financial Officer Hiroki Totoki expressed optimism for the upcoming fiscal year (April 2025 - March 2026), citing a strong lineup of both first-party and third-party titles, including anticipated releases such as Death Stranding 2, Ghost of Yōtei, and GTA VI.
Following these positive results, Sony has revised its annual net income forecast upward by 10% to 1.08 trillion yen ($7 billion). The company also indicated plans to expand its family-friendly game offerings following the success of Astro Bot.
This comprehensive performance demonstrates Sony's continued dominance in the gaming market, with strong hardware sales, digital content growth, and an expanding user base contributing to its success.
