Baldur’s Gate III Wins Nebula Award for Best Game Writing

Baldur’s Gate III Achieves Another Milestone: Nebula Award for Best Game Writing

The 59th Nebula Awards, organized annually by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA), have announced their winners. While the Nebula Awards primarily celebrate the work of authors, they also recognize the contributions of writers in contemporary media, including video games.

This year, the award for Best Game Writing was bestowed upon Baldur’s Gate III. Competing alongside it in this category were The Bread Must Rise, Alan Wake II, the tabletop game Ninefox Gambit RPG, Dredge, and Chants of Sennaar. The recognition of Baldur’s Gate III highlights the game's exceptional narrative quality, engaging storytelling, and the immersive experience it provides to players.

In addition to the Best Game Writing category, the Nebula Awards also honored various other media. Notably, the Ray Bradbury Award for Best Dramatic Presentation was awarded to "Barbie." Other close contenders for this prize included the third episode of The Last of Us, "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves," "Nimona," "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse," and "The Boy and the Heron."

This recognition marks a significant achievement for Baldur’s Gate III, joining the ranks of previous winners such as Elden Ring, Hades, and The Outer Worlds. The Nebula Award for Best Game Writing continues to highlight the importance and impact of storytelling within the gaming industry, celebrating the creativity and innovation of game writers who bring complex narratives and memorable characters to life.

As the landscape of media evolves, the inclusion of video game narratives in prestigious literary awards like the Nebulas underscores the growing recognition of video games as a powerful storytelling medium. This accolade for Baldur’s Gate III not only honors the game’s writers but also sets a high standard for future video game narratives.
